Model-Based Development & Tool Support

Tool-supported model-based software and systems engineering

Situation

The growing supply of cheaper and more powerful control units, sensors, and actors as well as the climbing demand for more efficient, flexible, and feature-rich embedded products has lead to the problem of coping with increasingly large and inter-connected and therefore complex systems. Especially the inter-discipline and inter-domain characteristics of those complex and software-intesive systems present new challenges to their developers.

Goal

View Sets, Data Model of Product, Analysis Methods, and Synthesis Methods as Main Fields of Model-based Development

The goal is the provision of methods and technologies for the seamless development of high-quality embedded systems, supported through a tool-box of architectural and functional views, a corresponding product data model integrating views and phases, as well techniques for design-space exploration via validation, verification, and synthesis mechanisms. Since these methods and techniques are essentially defined by the different characteristics - like required safety levels or degree of reuse - of the individual application domains - like automotive, avionics, or automation - based on this general framework domain-specific instances of the tool support is provided.

Approach

Domain-specific descriptions and analysis mechanisms
Domain-specific descriptions (operations modes and mode-specific control functions) and analysis mechanisms (structural architecture analysis)

We develop solutions for the efficient engineering of high-quality software-intensive systems, starting with the implementation of domain-specific authoring tools for different  views of a product under development, via product data management systems for different application domains, to mechanisms for model analysis as well as model transformation and model synthesis.  Since especially in model-based development the tool-support of the corresponding views and methods is of central importance, the implementation of those tools and mechanisms is a major part of our portfolio.

Benefit

The seamless model-based development process enables the application of additional constructive forms of quality assurance, the front-loading of analytic qualitiy assurance to early development phases, and the automatization of the later development steps. Overall, this leads to the simultaneous reduction of development time and cost and increase of product quality.
