Automated manufacturing of tomorrow: The factory that adapts

fortiss future factory

Markets are changing continuously. The fortiss future factory follows suit: A research and technology platform for innovations in manufacturing automation and operations.

The manufacturing plant of the future must flexibly respond to a continuously changing market, if it is to stay competitive. Shorter product life cycles, an ever growing variety of products, and ever smaller lot sizes require manufacturing systems that dynamically respond to changing requirements.

The fortiss future factory serves to evaluate new approaches towards productions facilities of the future. The key research focus is on ways to increase plant modularity and better automate the system setup, always keeping an eye on industrial application.

Research questions addressed by way of the fortiss future factory include:

  • What does the factory of the future look like?
  • How can a factory that actively embraces change be built?
  • How can the modularity of manufacturing systems be improved?
  • How can a manufacturing system plan manufacturing operations autonomously?
  • What are the limits of automation in manufacturing?

At fortiss, these topics and others are investigated in the course of multiple projects. The research results are applied to the fortiss future factory to validate them in an industrial setup. The project outcomes are then disseminated to a broad audience by way of publications and trainings.
