Ute Schmid is a professor for cognitive systems at the University of Bamberg. She obtained degrees in computer science and psychology from the Technical University Berlin, where she also earned a doctorate in computer science and was promoted to professor.

She has worked at the Technical University Berlin, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Osnabrück. She has been conducting research and teaching in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning and cognitive modeling for more than 15 years. Her focus is on inductive programming, interpretable and human-level machine learning and the generation of explanations for learned models.

Prof. Schmid combines knowledge-based methods and machine learning for partnership-based diagnostics support in the fields of medicine, Industry 4.0 and Agrar 4.0. She develops cognitive tutorial systems and is active in the area of AI and School.

She has been a research fellow at fortiss since late 2019, where she is engaged in the flagship project Robust AI, as well as in the IBM fortiss Center for AI.
