After earning a degree in mathematics with a minor in computer science, Prof. Broy obtained a doctorate at the TUM School for Mathematics and Computer Science. He served as a full professor for computer science at TUM from 1989 to 2005. He was a founding dean of the TUM School for Computer Science and has been an emeritus professor at TUM since 2015. Prof. Broy is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina, acatech and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Broy primarily conducts research into the modeling and development of complex software systems with the goal of establishing and further enhancing software and systems engineering methods with a focus on quality assurance and long-term system evolution.

Prof. Manfred Broy is a founding director of fortiss and currently serves as a senior research fellow, where he focuses on the issue of software and systems engineering.
