BMSEIoT

Brownfield Semantic Integration Demonstrator based on Mendix and OPC UA

BMSEIoT

BMSEIoT explores low code tools such as Mendix, and semantic Web technologies to assist in an automated way the interconnection of greenfield and brownfield devices into an Industrial IoT Edge system. The benefit for the end-user is improved interoperability of the system and reduced manual intervention in the shop-floor.

Project description

BMSEIoT addresses brownfield and greenfield integration into IoT end-to-end systems via the application of semantic technologies and OPC UA information models, MQTT. Devices on the shop-floor; their capabilities; data and properties are described via standardised semantic approaches and data is transmitted to the Edge based on common industrial approaches, e.g., OPC UA, MQTT.

BMSEIoT explores the capability to provide bi-directional data exchange between the shop-floor and the Edge, via tools such as Mendix and Siemens AG proprietary solutions.

The project is developed in partnership with Siemens AG.

Research contribution

The project shall develop a proof-of-concept demonstrator (TRL 4) for automated brownfield integration via semantic approaches on the fortiss IIoT Lab. fortiss contributes with the open-source mechanisms required to allow the bi-directional communication to occur, including extensions to Mendix.

Project duration
