Neurorobotics Platform
The Neurorobotics Platform (NRP) is an integrated simulation platform designed for roboticists, neuroscientists, and AI enthusiasts to develop and control virtual 3D robots using a wide range of neural network models. It provides fully customizable environments for closed-loop embodied simulation of virtual agents and includes both template environments and a ready-to-use model library featuring rigid-body robots, compliant tendon-driven robots, and musculoskeletal models.
The platform is available online and can also be installed locally on a computer. It uses Gazebo as its underlying robot simulator and supports a variety of neural simulation and AI frameworks, including NEST, SpiNNaker, PyNN, Nengo, and TensorFlow. This enables users to implement and evaluate a broad spectrum of brain simulations, such as spiking neural networks, as well as different control and behavioral models.
Within the Human Brain Project and beyond, the Neurorobotics Platform is widely used in educational courses, neurorobotics and neuroscience research projects, and the development and testing of neuro-inspired AI applications. The platform enables the systematic investigation of interactions between brain models, behavior, and environmental dynamics in realistic simulation scenarios.
