Edge Cloud

Towards digital autonomy

fortiss has recently seen its Horizon Europe CODECO project (COgnitive Decentralised Edge Cloud Orchestration) accepted. Involving a consortium of 16 relevant partners in edge cloud in Europe, CODECO shall develop a highly flexible and adaptive framework for orchestration of edge cloud, based on a novel view for decentralised edge computing.

The CODECO project is coordinated by fortiss, Prof. Dr. Rute C. Sofia, Head of fortiss competence field Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). CODECO will start at the end of 2022 and will run for a total of three years. The project partners in the context of the edge cloud include fortiss, INOVA Mais, Siemens, Atos, IBM, Eclipse Foundation, Netsoft-Intrasoft, Intracom-Telecom, ATHENA Research, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Telefonica, University of Göttingen, i2CAT, University of Piraeus Research Center, RedHat and Almende.

CODECO aims at assisting in supporting the edge cloud continuum via the development of a cognitive, decentralised edge cloud framework that integrates a unique, smart, and cross-layer orchestration between the decentralised data flow, computation, and networking services. The project will address six use cases in the areas of smart cities, energy, manufacturing and smart buildings.

The Research Institute of the Free State of Bavaria for software-intensive systems is not only the project coordinator, but also delivers a significant scientific contribution, with its research on context-aware edge-based selection and offloading, considering a cross-layer approach that integrates networking aspects, computation aspects and data management.

The CODECO framework will be open, with multiple releases during the next three years, and the CODECO consortium expects to provide an integration in worldwide experimental environments, such as EdgeNet.
