Simulation framework for deterministic wireless/wired networks

DetNetWiFi Network Simulator

DetNetWiFi is an ns-3 framework based on fortiss’ realistic TSN/Wi-Fi 6 demonstrator, TSNWiFi. The simulation environment considers overlapping Wi-Fi 6 networks (multi-AP environments) connected through a fixed Ethernet/TSN backbone to support advanced IoT applications, such as high-resolution video streaming.

The framework includes the following components:

  • Modeling of TSN Endpoints and TSN-Capable Switches connected to TSN-over-Wi-Fi regions. Multiple TSN endpoints are interconnected through two TSN-capable switches, one of which is connected to a TSN wireless region. The wired network segment additionally incorporates a Time-Aware Shaper (TAS). See the TSNWiFi example for further details.
  • TWT-Based Time-Aware Scheduling, enabling deterministic communication in Wi-Fi 6 networks.
  • Clock Model with Support for Per-Node Clocks. This component provides an individual clock for each network node, allowing synchronization aspects to be modeled realistically. Within the wired domain, each node can synchronize its local clock with an IEEE 1588 grandmaster clock located on one of the switches. Wireless nodes likewise maintain their own local clocks.
  • Synchronization Based on the Fine Time Measurement (FTM) Protocol. The framework includes the FTM-PTP synchronization approach developed as part of the fortiss TSNWiFi project. This enables the detailed investigation and evaluation of synchronization mechanisms between wired and wireless network participants.
