fortiss is shaping Europe’s future in 6G research

The state research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for software-intensive systems, fortiss, is taking on a central role in European 6G research as a founding and board member of the new research and industry initiative, the Datacom Industry Association (DIA). The official founding of the DIA will take place on September 29, 2025, as part of an event in Munich and marks an important step towards creating a strong European platform for digital communication technologies.

Strategic Impulses for 6G Research by fortiss and DIA

The DIA brings together expertise from industry, research, and user sectors to sustainably strengthen Europe’s innovation capacity in digital communication. The focus is on developing secure, robust, and efficient communication systems that meet future connectivity and data exchange requirements across diverse application fields.

As a key representative of fortiss on the DIA board, Dr. Rute Sofia, Head of the Industrial Internet of Things competence area, actively drives the strategic direction of the initiative and delivers important impulses for practice-oriented research and development.

Important Contribution to Networld Europe SRIA 2024

A key contribution of the DIA to the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) 2024 of Networld Europe, the European Technology Platform, marks an important step. The SRIA serves as a central roadmap for research and innovation in the European ICT sector and plays a significant role in guiding the development of future network technologies such as 6G.

Within the SRIA, the DIA has intensively worked on systematically elaborating the technological foundations considered essential enablers for future 6G communication systems. Key topics such as routing, addressing, transport protocols, and novel approaches to interconnectivity beyond today’s Internet structures were brought into strategic focus. For the first time, cross-cutting technologies that enable and advance a wide range of vertical application areas in the future 6G ecosystem are comprehensively addressed.

“This contribution represents a major milestone for the communications research community and reflects extensive input from DIA members. These contributions formed the technological bedrock for what is now the Systems and Enabling Technologies Working Group (WG) within the DIA. This is a huge success for our community,” said Dirk Trossen, co-chair of the Working Group of the DIA.

About the Datacom Industry Association (DIA)

The DIA is a Europe-wide innovation community dedicated to the development and implementation of advanced communication technologies. Its focus is on promoting secure, robust, and high-performance systems for digital information exchange across local and global networks. By fostering close collaboration between companies of all sizes, research institutions, and user industries, DIA aims to drive technological innovation and strengthen Europe’s digital competitiveness.
